Sure, Analog:Shift is a business built around the love of watches — mostly mechanical watches. But, in essence, it’s our love for timepieces and timekeeping in general that are the common themes throughout the items we procure. And that includes the love of clocks in general: pocket watches, travel clocks, and more.

After all, in the couple hundred years before the First World War, personal timekeeping was all about the pocket watch, and before that, it was larger clocks that were front and center, horologically. We still believe a good clock — such as a classic travel model from the 1920s or 1930s — has a place in the watch lover’s collection.

This particular timepiece is an incredible combination clock and weather station. Produced by Swiss watchmaker Angelus in the 1960s, it takes the form of a 9” x 5” x 6” brass and lacquer globe in gold and blue complete with timing, thermometer, hygrometer, and barometer dials.

The hand-wound clock section, housed in a 37.8mm brass case with an acrylic crystal and a smooth bezel, features a satin silver dial with applied brass indices, a matching brass ‘spear’ handset, an outer minute track, and a retailer signature from Maximo Blum in Caracas.

The thermometer section, likewise housed in a 37.8mm brass case with acrylic crystal, features a silver dial with a brass hand and a thermometer calibrated in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. The hygrometer and barometer feature the same brass housing with satin silver dials and brass handsets — the hygrometer with a percentage gauge, and the barometer with a barometric pressure dial ringed with weather descriptions in Spanish.

Weather stations like these are vestiges of an analog time that will likely never resurface — a time before all the world’s information could be contained in an object that fits in one’s pocket. With its impeccable craftsmanship and beautiful design, this timekeeper from Angelus is among the best such weather stations that we’ve ever come across.
